The 2005 Clos St. Jacques is, not surprisingly, the best of a very stellar lineup of Gevrey premier crus in the Fourrier cellars this year. The bouquet is deep and beautifully complex for such a young wine, as it offers up a mélange of black cherries, red plums, cocoa, grilled meats, blood orange, a strikingly complex base of soil nuance, woodsmoke, mustard seed, roses and perhaps a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and gloriously pure, with great mid-palate depth, impeccable balance, laser-like focus, fine-grained tannins, and haunting length and complexity on the transparent and intensely flavored finish.
